USA Pan-Pacific Debate Championship 2007
Hawai Pacific University and Claremont McKenna College,
you are cordially invited to attend the Pan-Pacific Championship Debate Tournament, October 27-28, 2007. The event will be
hosted by Hawai Pacific University
in Honolulu. The tournament is open to US and international colleges and
universities. The tournament features six preliminary debates and semi-final elimination debates.
The event will feature the relaxing and magnificently luxurious tropical style of Honolulu, the beautiful
site and facilities and friendly welcoming atmosphere of Hawai Pacific
University and the tournament management prowess and amenities of Claremont McKenna College.
The top performing team will be designated as the Pan Pacific Champion. The top performing US team will be designated as US champion. Registration for the tournament begins

2007 comes to Malaysia
UT MARA debating society of
Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia will be hosting this year Australs
from July 2 to July 9. The Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship (”Australs”) is the world's second
largest debating tournament and equal in prestige to the World University Debating Championship. Over its thirty-year history
it has developed from a competition purely between Australian teams, to involving initially just New
Zealand, and then all of Asia. It now attracts around 300 competitors
each year from around the Asia-Pacific region. The tournament is considered the most intellectually demanding in the world,
and is recognized for its high standards of debating and adjudicating. Debaters have half an hour to prepare a case on topics
ranging from regional politics, international economic policy, sport, culture, religion and philosophy.
AKTEL - Drishty Debate Championship 2007

The 'AKTEL Debate Championship, 07'. The one week long program included 7th inter school English debate competition and 1st
Inter university English debate competition. Nine best English medium schools of the port city Chitagong took part in this

Medium School, The grand final of this competition
was held on 18th May at the hall room of Hotel Peninsula. Drishty also organised 1st Inter-university English debate competition for
the very first time in Chitagong. The University of Chitagong, CUET, USTC, Independent University,
Bangladesh, International Islamic University, Chitagong, Premier University and BGC Trust University
took part in this competition. The Final of Inter-university Debate which was presided over by Dr. Mohit Ul Alam, writer and
teacher, English Dept, Chitagong University. In this debate the wining team was University
of Science and Technology (USTC). The debaters are Afroza Sultana and
Yakub Ali. The 1st runner up team was Chitagong University represented by Nasir Uddin and Jewel Chy.
UT MARA wins The 14th
All Asian Debate Championships 2007
Universiti Teknologi MARA,
Malaysia won the 14th All-Asians Intervarsity
Debating Championship recently. Hosted by Chung Ang University, South Korea, the tournament was held from 7th to 14th May 2007. On the motion that
"This House Would Partition Iraq", UT
MARA beat Universiti Malaya in the Grand Finals by a landslide 9-0 unanimous decision. The team consisted of Adiba Shareen
Al-Ayubi, Amir Zharif Abdullah, and Danial Amir, all of whom are undergraduates from the Faculty of Law. Danial Amir was named
Best Speaker of the Grand Finals and also won the Overall Best Speaker prize, thus retaining the title within UT MARA for
two consecutive years. Meanwhile, Amir Zharif was ranked 4th Best Speaker in Asia.UT MARA is the first all-Malay team that
has ever won the Asian Championship.
BRB Cables and NDF BD 3rd National Debate Festival'07
BRB cables in association with National
Debate Federation of Bangladesh (NDF BD) arranged a two-day debate competition in Kushtia. The programme titled “BRB
Cables NDF BD 3rd National Debate Festival'07,” brought debate to Kushtia in an unprecedented form. The inauguration
ceremony was held on May 18. Chief guest at the programme was Mahfuz Anam, editor, The Daily Star. Special guests were Prof.
AFM Yusuf Haider, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dhaka University; Mohammad Mojibur Rahman, Chairman, BRB Group; Anisul Haque, Majedur
Rahman, country director, Bank Alfalah Moinuddin Bishwash Babu, chairman, Bishwash Group; Enamul Haque, Managing Director,
Ambition Plus Consultants Ltd and Nibha Rani Pathok, head mistress, Kushtia Zila School. The ceremony was presided over by
Mohammad Nurul Islam, District Commissioner, Kushtia.The closing ceremony was held on May 19. Chief guest at the programme
was Iqbal Shobhan Chowdhury, editor Bangladesh Observer. Special guests were Mohammad Safayet Hossain, General Secretary,
NDF and others.
TIB-CUDS Inter-Department Debate Competition 2007
Mass communication and journalism department of Chitagong University became champion of the TIB-CUDS Inter-Department Debate Competition that ended at Chitagong University.
The motion of the debate was 'Not terrorism but corruption makes the present world unstable'. In another debate titled 'Corruption
and not politics is the major hindrance to encouraging foreign investment in Bangladesh',
Law department defeated finance and banking department. Dr Syed Manzurul Islam, professor of English department of Dhaka University,
was present as chief guest at the concluding session of the competition organized jointly by Chitagong University Debating
Society (CUDS), Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Sachetan Nagorik Committee, Chitagong at the business faculty
auditorium. Debaters of 34 departments took part in the four-day-long competition where apart from parliamentary debate, open
debate was also held. Manzurul Islam and Shariful Abedin, former president of CUDS, performed as the speakers in the final
round of the English and Bangla debate.

Londonmet Inter University Public Speaking Competition 07
The first Londonmet Inter-University
Public Speaking Competition was held at the auditorium of the British Council on the 11th of May'2007. London metropolitan university sponsored it and Excluded Production House in association
with Dhaka University Debating Society organised it. Eight participants from seven different educational institutes participated
in the competition. The judges of the competition were Mahmud Alam Bappy, Mehedi Hasan Tamim (ex president, DU debating society)
and Shamsur Rahman Parvez (ex vice president, DU debating society). The topic for speaking was “Miles to go…before
I sleep”. A quiz competition was held for the audience after participants delivered their speeches. The honorable Vice
Chancellor of Dhaka University, Mr. S.M.A. Fayez arrived at the venue for the prize giving ceremony. Mofazzel Hossain Sumon
of Dhaka University
was announced first in the competition and he won himself a personal computer. Sajid Mahbub of American
International University- Bangladesh came second and won a cell
phone and Sanjeeb Hossain of Brac University
stood third and won a digital camera. Ten members from the audience who performed well in the quiz competition were gifted
with dictionaries.
BDC National Schools Debating Camp 2007
The challenging task of hand-picking 'the talented five' for World Schools Debating Championships 2007 was as usual
brought upon the 'Bangladesh Debating Council' (BDC) and this year, the institution hosting the grand event by East West University! The event was held within
the premises of the university, under the coordination of the EWUDC (East West University Debating Club), on the 30th and
31st of March. Day II- starting with a photo session that included all 18 participants, adjudicators of the BDC, President
and GS of EWUDC and all those in the Program Management Committee. Selection Phase- III began at 10 am in which, participants
were individually tested, completely separate from the other participants. While each participant fought to grab marks from
the adjudicators, the others played games and danced to different tunes. The closing ceremony of the two day event, was adorned
with a prize giving ceremony and a grand buffet dinner in which, Mr. Jalaluddin Ahmed, President Board of Directors, EWU,
was present. Even though, the final selection has not been made yet, irrespective of which five make it all the way to Seoul, the nation is proud of its youth, and wishes them a
hearty goodluck!
First Women Debate Competition
A total of 1000 women debaters from 16 women colleges and different halls of Dhaka University will participate
at the daylong programme.Eden Girls' College Debating Club (EMCDC) organises the competition in association with National
Debate Federation Bangladesh (NDF BD).
Speaking at a press conference at Eden Girls' College auditorium yesterday, Dr Dilara Hafiz, moderator of EMCDC, said debating
is the best way to practice freethinking to flourish the latent talents of a student. Dr Dilara hoped EMCDC will play a significant
role during the country's critical condition by creating meritorious debaters through arranging debate competitions regularly.
The daylong programme includes rally, public speaking competition, workshop, NDF BD model debate, multimedia presentation,
plan chat debate and cultural programme. Save the Children, USA, Ambition Plus Consultant Ltd, J&J Essential Products
Ltd and Banglalink are the sponsors of the function while ATN Bangla and Radio Today are media partners
North South University, Bangladesh
has won the bid to host the 15th All Asian Debate Championship, 2008 in Bangladesh.
This will be the first ever Asians in South Asia. The organizer of this championship will
be debating club of NSU. NSU Debating Club is the first student activity club at NSU which has brought national and international
recognition to the university through student activities; NSU Debating club is the leading club in terms of earning competitive
laurels against other institutions. The missions and goals of this club are to promote the art of debating and public speaking
among the students of the university.

Debate Festival 2007
Mohsin Hall Dhaka University
and Masterda Surjasen Hall of University of Dhaka became Champion in English and Bangla Debate
respectively in the 'The Daily Star 4th Inter Hall English Debate Championship' and The 7th Inter-Hall Bangla Debate Competition’07. The announcement was made at
six p.m. on the closing day of the championships by the prolific guests Professor A. F. M. Yousuf Haider, the honorable Pro-Vice
Chancellor of Dhaka University. Mr. Mahfuz Anam, Editor of The Daily Star; Professor Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam, Chief Moderator
of Dhaka University Debating Society; Mr. A. S. M. Atikur Rahman, Moderator of Dhaka University Debating Society was also
present at the occasion. The program was presided by Mr. Rashedul Alam Rashed, President of Dhaka University Debating Society.
The guests gave their short speeches before giving away the prizes. The moderator Mr. Atikur Rahman made a proposal-mixed
query to the Pro Vice Chancellor whether debate could be the part of the academic syllabus and added as a subject in the university.
Chief moderator Professor Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam thanked the whole DUDS team for their excellent arrangement and wished
all the success for the debaters in the upcoming future.
Sylhet Inter-University Debate Competition
Metropolitan University Team became champions in the debate competition organized by the Rotaract Club of Sylhet Surma. The
theme of the competition was Juktir
Dahone Purao Dondo (Burn disputes with the power of reasoning).
Murari Chand College Team won the runner's up trophy.The inter-university debate competition was the first ever of its kind
in Sylhet. There have been debate competitions at college level, but this was the first such attempt for university students.
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Metropolitan University (MU), Leading University (LU), Sylhet International
University (SIU), Murari Chand University College (MCUC) and a few other well-reputed institutions participated in the competition.
TIB Debate on ‘women against corruption"
The Transparency International Bangladesh organized a daylong debate titled ‘women against
corruption’ on the occasion of International Women Day-2007 on March 7. The debate was held at the Teachers Students
Center of Dhaka University .the event was participated by girl students from different private and government colleges and
universities, a TIB press release said. TIB, in cooperation with the Dhaka University Debating Society, East West
University, Independent University

MGBS Inter Schools Debating Championships 2007
Motijheel Govt. Boys High School Debating Club Team 1 Became Champion
in the MGBS Inter Schools Debating Championships 2007 by defeating MGDSDC 3 in the Championship Final. The motion of the final
was “This House believes that NGO’s in Bangladesh
are the main cause for our dependency”. Shobhon, Jani and Nahian were crowned as the Champion of 2007. A total of 23
three members’ teams including VDC, IDC, GDC, DCL, MGGS participated with the host MGBS in this championships

The 'Independence Day Debate Competition', organised by ATN Bangla, a private satellite channel, began in the
city yesterday with the slogan 'Let conscience be reflected in the mirror of logic'. A total of 16 colleges in Dhaka city,

Pre Worlds Ends
International School Dhaka-ISD Team A became champion in the 3rd BDC Pre World Schools
Debating Championships after defeating Manarat A in the Grand Final Debate ended at The Red Brick School at Uttara in the
city yesterday. More than 30 schools took part in the debating competition organized by Bangladesh Debating Council (BDC).
After six rounds of preliminaries, quarters and semi-finals, two finalist teams have emerged: Manarat
International School-A and International
School Dhaka (ISD)-A. Sohara Mehroze, Mehidi Bin Samad and M Hasanul Kaiser represented Manarat while ISD team comprises Shafkat
Manir, Shabab Mirza and Virjen Afawar. The motion for the final round debate was 'This house believes that we should enforce
a Ministerial Code of Ethics'. A total of five best debaters will represent Bangladesh
in the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) 2007 to be held in South
Korea in July. A total of 60 adjudicators assessed the competing teams in the Pre-world Schools
Debating Championship. Australian Council on Education (ACE) was the co-sponsor of the championship while ACI Creative Communication
was the media promoter.
RUET and RU Champions in Debate Festival
One of the largest debate festivals of the country concluded through auspicious function though
in a tense situation in Rajshahi on February 21, 2007. Reception and folk cultural presentation of one of the best five
singers of Close-up One Moshiur Rahman Rinku added much more amusement to the function. Rajshahi University of Engineering
and Technology (RUET) and Mass Communication Department of Rajshahi University (RU) became Champions in Inter-College and
Parliamentary Debate Competition respectively. Moreover, Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu, student of Mass Communication Department of
RU annexed champion in the Interpersonal Debate Competition.
MLIS defeated Scholastica
On the 8th February 2007, Maple Leaf International School defeated Scholastica at
the National Television English Parliamentary Debate Championship. The motion of the round was “This house proposes
that lack of health awareness is the root cause of maternal mortality” with MLIS as the Proposition and Scholastica
as the Opposition. The Speakers of MLIS were Rubaiya Sharin, Zarin Tasnim and Marzana Ferdous.
Manarat Wins Over Sunnydale
The former BTV champion debated against Sunnydale on 8th February 2007 in 7th BTV tournament.
Manarat won with huge margin over its opponents. The motion was “Only good political will can half the number of poor
people in Bangladesh”. The debaters
were Sohara Mehhroz, Hasib Reza and Mehrab bin Bakhtiar.
3rd BDC Pre Worlds Updates
After last year’s
achievements from the World Schools Debating Championships, Bangladesh Debating Council is going to host the 3rd
BDC Pre Worlds Championships to select the Team Bangladesh for the WSDC 2007. Championships date has been announced as March
1, 2007 to March 3, 2007. Pre registration is open till February 19, 2007. Interested Schools and Colleges are requested to

IBA returns from WUDC 2007 with heads high
Institute of Business Administration from the University Of Dhaka achieves the highest result among all the university teams participated from Bangladesh in the World Universities Debating Championships 2007. Team IBA A and
B return with 12 points from worlds this time. A total of five university teams form Bangladesh participated in this year worlds. The achievements were as followed
IBA A-12 points, IBA B-12 points, NSU A-10 points, IBA C-9 points and DU A- 8 points.

leading institution for studies in commerce and economics is going to host South Asian Debating Festival 2007 from the 1st

Shadow Parliament 2006
The opening ceremony was displayed to be held at the EWU Auditorium.
The events of the first day was jointly hosted by EWU and NSU on 29 November 2006. The first round of baroari (public speaking) debate competition was held at both the hosting universities. The debaters were divided
into 5 groups. Groups 1, 3, 5 continued their session at EWU while groups 2 and 4 were taken to NSU for the first round. Moshfeka Karim of VNC, was announced the best debater, while Manzur-al-Matin of
DU and Kazi Teuni Binte Zinnat of VNC were announced the first and second runners-up respectively.
BDF National School Bangla Debate Championship 2006
The Chittagong Government Girls’ High School has been selected champion in the BDF National School Bangla Debate
Championship 2006 jointly organized by the Bangladesh Debate Federation and the Academy for Educational Development. They
defeated the Silver Bells

began on September 11 at Chittagong Theatre Institute participated by 16 schools.
Safwan Shabab of BDC Team Bangladesh will lead Colgate Team
Safwan Shabab a member of the Team Bangladesh in the World Schools Debating Championships
2006 has been selected to lead Colgate University USA in the WUDC 2007. He just returned from a debate competition at
Yale University, and in late December he will fly with other members of the Colgate team to Vancouver
for the World Universities Debating Championship, hosted this year by the University
of British Columbia.

A 43-member central committee for the National Debate Federation was formed at the Daffodil University recently. The committee
will serve for a two-year term. AKM Shoyeb has been made chairman of the federation while Partha Sanjay secretary general.

VDC won the 9th National Television Baroari Debate 2006
In the 9th National Television
Baroari Debate 2006, Viqarunnisa Noon
School and College has won the Championship. The competition was held
among the best speakers of National television
School Debate Competition in the United Nations format. The selective
round comprising 12 spectacular speakers from different institutions has been broadcasted on 28 August & 4 September 2006(Monday).
And the final round among the top 6 of the selective round will be broadcasted on 11 September 2006 (Monday). In this historical
event, Kazi Tuney Binte Zinnat became the champion beating all the best speakers of school debate.
Mastermind Edge
B.I.T in BTV Debate
The 7th National Television English Parliamentary Debate Championship has started and
it was Mastermind who took on B.I.T in one of the first round debates on Tuesday, 28th November 2006 at BTV; Rampura. The
motion was "Only Economic Sustainability Can Eliminate Gender Inequality". Mastermind was the Government and B.I.T the Opposition.
The debaters from Mastermind were Nazm-us-Saadat (Prime Minister), Saminur Majumdar (Minister of Women's Affairs) and Kashpee
Wahid (Cabinet Member). After a stormy session, Mastermind was declared winners by a margin of O.70 points.
NDDC National
English Debate Championship 2006
Institute of Business Administration of University of Dhaka- IBA became champion in the NDDC
National English Debating Championship 2006. IBA beat East West University Rhymes in the final debate on Friday, October 6th, 2006.
Bangladesh Ranked 10 Th in the WSDC 2006
Rashedul Hasan Stalin went with Team Bangladesh as the Coach to this year World Schools Debating Championships
which was hosted by Wales Center
for international affairs. Bangladesh Broke for Octo Final under BDC coaching
for the first time in the history of WSDC along with South Korea.

Bangla Debate Championships 2006.EWUDC Beat NSUDC in the grand final. Niaz Morshed Chowdrury of EWU judged the best speaker
in the final.
IBA National English Intervarsity Debating
Championships 2006
IUB Debating Club became champion in the IBA National English Debate Championships 2006.
IUB has won against IBA in the final. The Champion Team members were Azim Ahmed, Tanvir Haroon and Habibur Rahman. Tanvir
Haroon from IUB judged the best speaker in the grand final of the championships.
